U.S. Steel Tubular Products sued over retaliatory discharge of employee

A Titus County man is suing over claims his employer terminated his employment due to medical leave.

Rodney Lee Johnson filed a lawsuit June 30 in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas against U.S. Steel Tubular Products Inc., citing employment discrimination/retaliation.

Johnson was employed by U.S. Steel as a cutter operator at its facility in Hughes Springs. According to the complaint, management had knowledge that Johnson was engaged to a coworker and suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes.

Johnson says in 2013, his fiancee complained to management about the lack of females in high-paying positions within the company, and Johnson himself missed work due to his health problems.

According to the lawsuit, U.S. Steel falsely accused Johnson of forging notes from health professionals and fired him Oct. 10.

U.S. Steel has since reinstated Johnson, but has failed to pay him for the time he was not on payroll after his employment was falsely terminated.

U.S. Steel is accused of retaliation, Family and Medical Leave Act violations, MLA retaliation/discrimination and Americans With Disabilities Act discrimination – actual disability.

Johnson is being represented by attorney Wade A. Forsman in Sulphur Springs.
