EUREKA, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California school district has settled a lawsuit by civil liberties groups alleging pervasive racism and a failure to accommodate minority and disabled students.
The Times-Standard of Eureka reports that Eureka City Schools agreed to the settlement on Thursday.
The lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union and National Center for Youth Law was filed in 2013 on behalf of four students. It accused the district of suspending and disciplining minority students at disproportionate rates and not responding to racial bullying. It also said the district condoned weekly traditions in which female students were groped.
The settlement calls on the district, among other things, to reduce race and disability-based disparities in discipline.
The suit sought monetary compensation, but both the district and an attorney for the plaintiffs said they had agreed not to disclose whether the settlement included any money.
