Why would these companies fight so hard to keep employee rights at an absolute minimum, and fight so hard to repeal minimum wage laws? When the minimum wage is only $7.25 an hour. Not enough really to even live on.
Why would companies like Wal-Mart fight living wage increases such as those that were recently passed by the D.C. council, even threatening to close down stores in D.C. when Wal-Mart is one of the most profitable companies in the entire world?
One could make the argument, as they often do, that companies have a contractual obligation to their shareholders to make as much profit as possible.
This is where "Ethics" begin to conflict with "Profit" and the "Law" comes right in the middle.
So in other words, the more "ethical" companies take a hit to their profit margins. So the "less" ethical companies say "Well, if its LEGAL then it must be ETHICAL" and they hire big time attorneys to find ways to skirt the laws, or to look for loopholes within the law. Actions that are clearly UNETHICAL but as they are LEGAL these types of behaviors are widely practiced.
So in other words, to make a long story short, (or a short article even shorter) the majority of these companies are not ethical and they are not ran by "ethical" men. They are ran by CAPITALISTS. Men whose eyes are constantly on the bottom line, on the profit margins. Men who frankly very often could care LESS about ethics.
This means that Capitalism, in its rawest, purest form, is not an "ethical" or even a "moral" system. It is actually the reverse.
